FEATURES – Art + Medicine Dialogues 3raum Anatomietheater Vienna, October 2010 Introducing the workshop with a performance lecture. According to the anthropologist Alfred Gell – “If we look into the mirror, and dislike what we see, or indeed approve of what we see, we are responding, as patients, to an index (the mirror image) of which we are the agents. Portraiture is only a special instance of this, mediated by the activities of an artist, or a photographer” (Gell 1998: 49). Michael Häfner, my gastroenterologist, produced medical ‘portraitures’ of my intestines. Michael Häfner as operatore, reading Luigi Pirandello Photograph: Christina Lammer
