Manfred Frey

Manfred Frey is Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, and Head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the General Hospital of Vienna.  From 1968 – 74, he studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where he also graduated. His working experience comprises a.o.: Training in general surgery at the 2nd Surgical University Clinic in Vienna (1975 – 1980); Training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the 2nd Surgical University Clinic in Vienna (1979 – 1982); he specialized in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 1982; Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Canniesburn Hospital, Glasgow (1984); Department of Physiology, Univ. of Edmonton, Hand- and Reconstructive Microsurgery, Toronto, General Hospital (1986); Assistant Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Vienna (Thesis: "Free Muscle Transplantation with Microneurovascular Anastomosis", 1984). In 1984, he was awarded the Theodor Billroth Prize of the Austrian Society of Surgery. In 1987, he worked as Professor of Hand- and Microsurgery at the Faculty of Medicine at the RWTH Aachen, Germany, and 1988 as Head of the Section Head, Neck and Trunk at the Division of Hand-, Plastic and Reconstructive  Surgery, Department of Surgery, at the University of Zurich. In 1989, he became Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, at the University  of Zurich, in 1992 Professor of Plastic Surgery at the same University. In 1993, he was awarded the Georg-Friedrich-Götz-Prize by the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich. In 1996, he became Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Vienna, and Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, at the University Clinic, also in Vienna. Main topics of his research work are: Muscle transplantation, nerve regeneration, functional electrostimulation, quantitative assessment of movements in the face, breast reconstruction, reduction mammaplasty.  Cooperative projects with Christina Lammer at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria: 2004-2009: CORPOrealities (WWTF); 2009-2014: Surgical Wrappings (WWTF); 2010-2013: FEATURES – Vienna Face Project (FWF). Manfred Frey retired 2022.
