Vienna – human expressiveness is not limited to a smiling or angry face. The whole body is included in how a person expresses him- or herself. Making faces is vey much like dancing. However we automatically read in the faces of other people. Feelings are shared. A smile can be contagious.

I am working together with facially paralyzed persons who are treated in plastic and reconstructive surgery. After surgery the patients need to do exercises in front of a mirror on a daily basis. They get a list with schematic drawings of a human face and explanations of particular movements they shall do every day.

Some time ago I went with this catalogue of exercises to the Westbahnhof (train station) in Vienna. There are photo cabins and in one of them I made pictures of myself during I made faces from the list. The results are 21 little black and white portrait photographs of myself.

Wien – die beiden Mädchen, die an der FEATURES-Forschung teilnehmen, sind bereits acht und zehn Jahre alt. Beide haben die zweite Gesichtsoperation bei Manfred Frey hinter sich, wenngleich der Therapieerfolg erst nach etwa zwei Jahren nach der chirurgischen Behandlung beurteilt werden kann.

Bei dem Treffen bei mir zu Hause erzählten die Mütter der beiden Mädchen sich über ihre Erfahrungen. Davor gab es keinen Austausch mit anderen Eltern von im Gesicht gelähmten Kindern. Die Zehn- und die Achtjährige zeigten sich gegenseitig Videoaufnahmen. Beide bekamen im Rahmen der Forschungsarbeit – wie auch die zwei Buben – eine Kamera geschenkt. Zu Hause filmen sie in ihrer gewohnten Umgebung und werden in unterschiedlichen Situationen aufgenommen.  Die Videokamera wird als spielerisches Werkzeug eingesetzt. Die jungen FilmemacherInnen verwenden die Kamera als ‚Begleiterin’ und lernen rasch einen selbstverständlichen Umgang damit. Sie drücken sich über dieses Medium aus.

Salzburg – Kinder lernen spielerisch. Ein Schwerpunkt im FEATURES-Projekt mit im Gesicht gelähmten Patienten und Patientinnen ist der Arbeit mit Kindern gewidmet, die in der plastischen und wiederherstellenden Chirurgie behandelt werden, um die „schlafende Seite“ ihres Gesichts mit Hilfe von Nerven- und Muskeltransplantation aufzuwecken.

Manfred Frey, Leiter der Klinikabteilung für Plastische und Wiederherstellende Chirurgie an der Medizinischen Universität Wien (MUW), der die Forschungsarbeit zur Ausdrucksfähigkeit des menschlichen Gesichtes gemeinsam mit mir durchführt, zählt viele kleine Kinder zu seinen PatientInnen, die bereits mit einer Gesichtslähmung auf die Welt gekommen sind. Die beiden fünf und sechs Jahre alten Buben, die Sie auf den Bildern sehen, haben sich im Dezember zum ersten Mal getroffen. Sie verstanden sich auf Anhieb prächtig. Beide haben noch eine Operation bei Manfred Frey vor sich. Im Frühling 2012 ist es soweit.

London – the Anatomy Season, an innovative program that explores anatomy through the arts, organized by Clod Ensemble and supported by the Wellcome Trust, invited me to present video works at the Whitechapel Gallery in London on November 19 2012. In the frame of the event Screening the Body Roberta McGrath (social historian of art), Richard Wingate (neuroscientist), Nina Sellars (visual artist) and I discussed about diagnostic tools and moving images as sources of knowledge of the human body in medical culture and beyond.

Eleanor Crook has made anatomical and pathological wax sculptures for The Royal College of Surgeons and the Science Museum and she is a fine artist. In the frame of the Anatomy Season she instructed laypersons how to work with wax. I was one of the participants of this wonderful workshop.

Christine Borland’s hands: How do we understand the complex relationships between the self and other? Christine Borland is one of the Young British Artists. She investigates the above-mentioned question in biomedical institutions, creating a lively dialogue between medics and art.

Berlin and Vienna – together with my cooperation partner Artur Zmijewski, appointed curator of the 7^th Berlin Biennale 2012, I invited four clinicians to put their working practices, plastic and reconstructive surgeries, operations of the brain, removals of the bowels, and endoscopic examinations of the digestion system, on a large scale into paint color.

The physicians gave performance lectures in a particularly created rehearsal situation, using the paintbrush as their working tool. They reflected on their clinical practices and on images of the human body made in biomedicine. The results of these preparatory works will be presented at the Berlin Biennale in June 2012.

Vienna – in the course of my field studies in interventional radiology Johannes Lammer did a pencil drawing for me, explaining the treatment of an aortic aneurysm.

Vienna – the video presentation in London was prepared in the biomedical field of interventional radiology. I have been working there as a visual ethnographer between 2000 and 2004 and took the chance to actualize research materials.

Johannes Lammer (not related by blood with the author), head of the Department of Interventional Radiology at the Medical University Vienna, introduced me to a patient from Great Britain who needed to get an embolisation of her uterus ateries, treating her myoma. Unfortunately the treatment was rather painful for her. Nevertheless she allowed me to accompany her during her operation, using my video camera and documenting the procedures.

Moving images are used as diagnostic tools and locational devices every day in hospitals, clinics and laboratories but how and when did such techniques come to be accepted sources of knowledge about the body in medical culture? For this event, Lisa Cartwright traces the unusual history of medical imaging during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, presenting material that is at once disturbing and engrossing and artist Christina Lammer presents her work on interventional radiology and digital fluoroscopy imaging. In her video screening she will address issues of diagnosis and treatment of the blood flow as exemplary medical technique that shapes the ways of how we experience our bodies.

Whitechapel Gallery, London

For the screening at Whitechapel Gallery I will continue a study that was already performed in interventional radiology a decade ago. I will take the opportunity to spend one day in the operating theatres at the Department of Interventional Radiology and Angiography at Medical University Vienna (MUV), oberserving interventions with the help of video. In addition, I will video interview the head of the department, Johannes Lammer (not related by blood), about new innovations in his particular field of medical practice. The outcome of these investigations shall lead to the development of a video installation.

MUSKELTRANSPLANTATION – die Transplantation von Muskeln aus dem Oberschenkel findet etwa ein Jahr nach der Nerventransplantation (s. CROSS-FACE I) im Gesicht statt. Manfred Frey, Leiter der Abteilung für Plastische und Rekonstruktive Chirurgie an der Medizinischen Universität Wien (MUW), erklärt mir (CL) auch diesen Eingriff schematisch mittels Zeichnung.

Drawing Lessons von ÄrztInnen werden im Juni 2011 im Rahmen der 7. Berlin Biennale 2012 als künstlerische Versuchsanordnung stattfinden. Artur Zmijewski konzipierte das Projekt gemeinsam mit mir als Teil der Kunst orientierten Studie FEATURES – Wiener Gesichtsprojekt, gefördert vom Forschungsförderungsfonds (FWF).

NERVENTRANSPLANTATION – Manfred Frey, Leiter der Abteilung für Plastische und Rekonstruktive Chirurgie an der Medizinischen Universität Wien (MUW), erklärt mir (CL) mittels Zeichnung eine Nerventransplantation im Gesicht, eine von zwei Operationen, die in ihrer Mimik durch Lähmung eingeschränkte Personen zum Lächeln bringen und ihre Ausdrucksfähigkeit generell verbessern sollen.

Die Zeichnung spielt in der plastischen Chirurgie eine wesentliche Rolle, um Wissen zu vermitteln. Zudem trägt das Zeichnen, um etwa PatientInnen Operationen oder therapeutische Schritte zu erklären, emotional zur Herstellung von Vertrauen zum behandelnden Arzt oder zur Ärztin bei.
